Lest I "tarnish my halo before the paint is even dry" let me dispel any misconceptions! At my stage of life (I'm over 60), I'm merely trying to "finish well" (http://finishers.org ) Furthermore, I'm not laying much on the line for Christ compared to those missionaries who I hope to help to tell THEIR story via social media in order to further The Great Commission!Nevertheless, thanks so much for commenting! I'm glad you were inspired! I hope to find those others who God is stirring to enter Digital Missions.

Well, it certainly lends credibility to social media AND especially Twitter, doesn't it? I'm hoping this move by an Indianapolis-based company will kickstart a COMPREHENSIVE (rather than piecemeal) social media initiative in Indianapolis city government. Last July, I gave a social media presentation in the Mayor's Conference Room which I had hoped would lead to the use of social media in the city's delivery of services as well as its branding efforts. I cited the use of CoTweet by the city of San Francisco (see slide 7) and I see that Houston and Albuquerque are now also "on board" so I'm hoping. I think I'll give it another try!

I don't mean to be making matters worse, BUT this problem is exacerbated by the variety of ways, e.g. devices, some of us have to access the diversity of services. Although specific services and circumstances, e.g. location, dictate my choices, I have the following "pecking order" for my devices: - iPod touch (I can't afford iPhone service :-) - netbook - Tablet PC - Windows Mobile phone (unless it's a voice call which would make this no. 1) - desktop computer in my office at schoolWhen I'm out, I always have my phone (and usually my iPod touch) and I've been taking the netbook with me more and more. On top of carrying multiple devices, there is the additional burden of "caring and feeding" all of these devices (I haven't mentioned the other 2 laptops in the family! :-)It doesn't get any better, does it?Read more comments by Thomas Ho

In the "spirit" of Step 4, I'd like to suggest there are cases when it is OK to talk about yourself...or at least, for your AUDIENCE to talk about themselves! We ought to encourage them to share their passions and other aspects of their lives (especially via social media) so we can learn their spiritual gifts in order to harness them for God's Kingdom or to minister to them more effectively, for example. Then, with respect to Step 8, we'd know WHO we're dealing with. In a nutshell, we are less likely to fail at social media if we help OTHERS (those who we serve) to be SUCCESSFUL at social media.

Building your brand via blog comments is facilitated by backtype which aggregates virtually all of one’s comments across the Web. I have long been a “fan” of commenting services such as Disqus which I’ve incorporated into my own blog (I’m much more active as a commenter than as a blogger , but I am an even bigger fan of backtype which aggregates not only my comments made on services such as Disqus, but even those (like THIS ONE) which do not use any service (I hope this one shows up on my backtype profile as long as I use my personal brand URL (on the comment) which I registered with backtype.Read more comments by Thomas Ho

As an academic nearing the end of one career and looking forward to a ministry career, I can see both sides of this situation. In an increasingly competitive landscape for recruiting students or for students trying to find a job in a down economy, I have been an advocate for "branding" the educational experience via social media. Whether the provider or consumer of educational services, the brand can differentiate its holder in a competitive marketplace.As a Christian, I had been feeling conflicted about advocating branding because it seems to be about "self" rather than others. Twitter (especially with Lists) has helped me to deal with determining WHO to give my attention as I battle information overload. Therefore, I wouldN’T want to contribute to that information overload myself so I try to keep my blog posts relevant and I use Twitter to interact with a select group of people who I am trying to engage. IF I were Google, i would buy Twitter! The big question is: At what price? Then, Facebook wouldN'T be able to get their hands on it & "mess it up" as I fear they'll do with FriendFeed. At least, that would be preferable to killing FriendFeed which I fear even more! Anyway, as one who has "bet my brand" on Twitter, I am most concerned about its long-term future which is STILL an open question as far as I am concerned. Yes, YOU had a very good year!

As a matter of fact, I first experienced it with Wordpress.com as you can see from my comment at:http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2009/12/12/twitter...When entering the API endpoint, I noticed that Loren Brichter inserted a message saying “Alternative microblogging services are not officially supported, and some features may not work as expected” Hence, I am reluctant to raise this issue with Atebits.com.What makes you think that the problem only exists when the Twitter & Tumblr usernames are identical?
