| Twitter doesn't have the "granular" privacy settings of Facebook, but it is much more "streamlined" than Facebook which makes it easier to control what you allow to be seen. For example, if you want a tweet to be private, just use a direct message. It isn't the number of tweets sent that matters. What matters is what is SAID in those tweets! Here's a video which will explain what to AVOID:http://ow.ly/13VzF | |

| Re: CIT49900 Reflection # 2 a week ago | |
| You have to keep my comments about Singapore's IT infrastructure in context because its geography isn't as "challenging" as the US because it is a very small place. I think it would "fit" inside I-465! | |
| Re: Another reflection in life... a week ago | |
| Are you using TweetDeck on your phone? I was ONLY aware of an iPhone version and I hadn't noticed you had an iPhone. Am I mistaken?I tweeted on Friday asking IF the class would like to make Friday the due date for weekly reflections, but I supposed we can make it Sunday instead. let's discuss it in class on Tuesday. You'd better start a dialogue with me SOON about your project! | |
| Re: Weekly Blog 1-28-10 a week ago | |
| Until relatively recently, cablecos were regarded as more innovative than telcos, but telcos have "caught up" in order to become competitive. My son @brianho25 has strong opinions about telcos and cablecos so you ought to get to "know" him!If I were getting a new phone, I would more likely get an Android rather than an iPhone but that's mostly because I avoid AT&T Wireless because their service is just too expensive! At this point, I would most likely stay with Sprint due to the plan which I have. | |
| Re: CIT49900 Reflection # 2 a week ago | |
| You ought to do a post explaining HOW you intend to use Twitter so that you don't "miss" any tweets in which you're mentioned. Then, keep us posted via your blog on what you actually do and HOW it works out for you. What have you learned that causes you to feel that US IT infrastructure development lags behind other countries because we really haven't begun to compare the US with other countries YET? As a matter of fact, that's the point of your course project.I'm glad to hear you feel CHALLENGED this semester! | |
| Re: Weekly Blog 1-28-10 a week ago | |
| Why did you "go" all the way to the UK for help with VMware and HP servers? Are you trying to make some international contacts for CIT 49900?Do you have a personal preference for cableco or telco? Why?Does your wireless carrier offer an Android phone? Would it be economically feasible for you to upgrade your Voyager to another phone at this point in your contract? Perhaps for your course project, you might want to research how wireless carriers in other countries deal with their customers in a different way from American wireless carriers. | |
| Re: How a tweet brought makeshift 911 services to life in Haiti a week ago | |
| It looks like "crowdsourcing" is the big social media theme of the Haiti earthquake relief effort. That's WHY I've had a "Crowdsourcing" tab on my Haiti earthquake social media aggregation http://HaitiUnion.info from just about the very beginning as soon as I saw that theme emerge.Next step is to blog about it as soon as I "understand" it! :-) | |
| Re: What I Have Learned - 2 a week ago | |
| You've got to "jump in" and try the tools and services and then ask questions either face-to-face or even via social media (I know this is a "catch 22" BUT you've got to START somewhere!) in order to get practice.Read (and respond yourself) my comments on your classmates' blogs to get some additional feedback on the other aspects of your first post. | |

| I don't mean to be making matters worse, BUT this problem is exacerbated by the variety of ways, e.g. devices, some of us have to access the diversity of services. Although specific services and circumstances, e.g. location, dictate my choices, I have the following "pecking order" for my devices: - iPod touch (I can't afford iPhone service :-) - netbook - Tablet PC - Windows Mobile phone (unless it's a voice call which would make this no. 1) - desktop computer in my office at schoolWhen I'm out, I always have my phone (and usually my iPod touch) and I've been taking the netbook with me more and more. On top of carrying multiple devices, there is the additional burden of "caring and feeding" all of these devices (I haven't mentioned the other 2 laptops in the family! :-)It doesn't get any better, does it?Read more comments by Thomas Ho | |

I know it's still "early" BUT it seems you've already found it's really not that difficult after initially feeling overwhelmed. With respect to the course material, do you have any inkling about your course project? It isn't merely a "decent" photo...at least you have more hair than mine! I'm looking forward to seeing your online identity "shine" as you "polish" it. | |
| To create or curate? That is the Apple question a week ago | |
| Speaking as the "poster boy" of social media aggregation: http://blog.SocialAggregate.net I vote for curation because my personal experience, especially since the Iran election protests: http://Azadi4Iran.info & http://bit.ly/wapoth , demonstrates that curators add considerable value in dealing with the torrent of user-generated content which we now face. Not only have I been able to "be" at so many events via social media, but I have made it possible for so many others to join me as we are NOW grappling with the tragedy of the Haiti earthquake: http://HaitiUnion.info where not only can we not go ourselves, but we'd only get in the way if we did!Especially in my teaching, I am "pushing the edge of the envelope" not only via social media aggregation, but also as I experiment with curation of Twitter lists: http://twitter.com/cit49900/spring2010 & http://twitter.com/cit49900 to assess learning and to try to create a virtual study abroad experience for my students in: http://cit49900.LearnStream.infoI could go on and on: http://DrThomasHo.com but I think you get the idea!By the way, you ought to give me the Kindle so I can give it to my 14-year old daughter because I doubt I'll be able to "afford" to give her an iSlate as I contemplate retiring from academia in order to devote myself to harnessing social media for learning, non-profits, and other redeeming causes as my personal experience has persuaded me I no longer need my academic affiliation to provide either the information technology infrastructure nor the "brand" on which I had been trying to depend to help me to get the word out!Read more comments by Thomas Ho | |

| Although you said "I am normally not to (sic) good at writing stuff about what I did or do" you actually did a pretty good of REFLECTION by explaining your struggles! With respect to those struggles, you've got to TRY in order to learn HOW to use the tools better! | |
| Re: Weekly Blog 1-24-10 a week ago | |
| I'm glad you now realize that you hadn't previously thought about "personal branding" Although it isn't as significant to this course as IT infrastructure so I have to be "careful" how much time I spend on it, let me know if you need any help with branding yourself. There are other social media clients and Web-based services than TweetDeck and Seesmic Look so you need to think about HOW you're going to decide, especially to encourage you to use social media to maximize YOUR LEARNING!With respect to IT infrastructure, please concern yourself primarily with carriers, regulators, and other "players" IF you do discuss products, please do so in terms of HOW they interact with infrastructure services! | |
| Re: First CIT499 Reflection a week ago | |
| HOW do you FEEL about the social media tools you have learned? For example, WHY aren't you using Twitter more since your original fascination with it? What can we do to ENCOURAGE you?Although I emphasized LOCAL IT infrastructure, I did also explain the distinction between local & long-distance service which was much more significant then than it is now. Remind me to explain that distinction. The MFJ took effect in 1984 so there was NO 1986 court ruling.Do you have any ideas about your project topic? | |

| My wife @LauraHo is a former missionary and I have noticed that the missions agency to which she belonged http://OM.org has many other alumni. It seems to be this corps of people who once served the missions agency "in the field" could now be enlisted to serve the agency in the social media "field" by reading blog posts of those who share their heart for a people group and commenting on their posts on behalf of the missions agency. Comments from these former missionaries would have much credibility, wouldn't they? | |

| I could tell you were likely to be fairly knowledgeable before coming. Do you know David Poindexter (@mtheoryx) in Informatics? He says he learns a lot from me! :-)Since you were already knowledgeable, it made sense to choose Informatics to be "broadened" although I would have liked you to have chosen CIT! Especially, it seems Informatics has the flexibility for you to have taken CSCI as well as CIT courses. To meet someone like you, you should get to know Alex Conner (@gk4r) who unfortunately dropped out of school and is now running his own business. I got to know him well when he was a student so I hope to get to know you as well. | |
| Re: When it’s OK to be about ME! 3 weeks ago | |
| Although the post which originally motivated my post implied that many missions organizations aren't very aggressive about recruiting, I am not surprised by your assertion that the students " get hit by many orgs wanting their attentions" so I guess the point of my subsequent post (which I haven't done YET) is that a missions agency can make itself "distinctive from the pack and have a personal touch at the same time" via social media. | |
| Collide Magazine : How to FAIL @ Social Media 3 weeks ago | |
| In the "spirit" of Step 4, I'd like to suggest there are cases when it is OK to talk about yourself...or at least, for your AUDIENCE to talk about themselves! We ought to encourage them to share their passions and other aspects of their lives (especially via social media) so we can learn their spiritual gifts in order to harness them for God's Kingdom or to minister to them more effectively, for example. Then, with respect to Step 8, we'd know WHO we're dealing with. In a nutshell, we are less likely to fail at social media if we help OTHERS (those who we serve) to be SUCCESSFUL at social media. | |

| With respect to your concern expressed in the second paragraph, I had NO intention to address it in my original post which was aimed at prospective recruits for missions agencies. I suppose I could address that in a subsequent post.In the meantime, just let me say I have "mixed feelings" about ministries which carry the name of their founder. | |

| Building your brand via blog comments is facilitated by backtype which aggregates virtually all of one’s comments across the Web. I have long been a “fan” of commenting services such as Disqus which I’ve incorporated into my own blog (I’m much more active as a commenter than as a blogger , but I am an even bigger fan of backtype which aggregates not only my comments made on services such as Disqus, but even those (like THIS ONE) which do not use any service (I hope this one shows up on my backtype profile as long as I use my personal brand URL (on the comment) which I registered with backtype.Read more comments by Thomas Ho | |
| college ministries, please recruit! a month ago | |
| As an academic nearing the end of one career and looking forward to a ministry career, I can see both sides of this situation. In an increasingly competitive landscape for recruiting students or for students trying to find a job in a down economy, I have been an advocate for "branding" the educational experience via social media. Whether the provider or consumer of educational services, the brand can differentiate its holder in a competitive marketplace. As a Christian, I had been feeling conflicted about advocating branding because it seems to be about "self" rather than others. I was even more convicted:http://www.flickr.com/photos/welshby/4235136685/comment72157622998714471/by a photo from my Urbana social media aggregation http://UrbanaConf.infoSteve 's comment reminds me that even students practice personal branding :http://studentbranding.com/and when they're deliberate about it, they reveal a lot about where their heart is! So, for example, if someone blogs about a people group, we know they have a heart for that people group. That sounds like a great candidate for reaching that people group! At the beginning of this comment, I said I'm looking forward to a ministry career in which I hope to harness social media not only to help ministries to brand themselves, but also to use social media to identify a promising missions candidate who reveals "his character, his ministry experience, his calling, his giftedness, his life skills, his finances" in order to "get to know him." I don't know how many people are blogging (and tweeting) their passion for missions, but I certainly would like to TRY to find them in this cost-effective way!I could tell my own story from the point-of-view of a prospective missions candidate, but I'll save that for a different forum such as my own blog.Read more comments by Thomas Ho | |

| Twitter (especially with Lists) has helped me to deal with determining WHO to give my attention as I battle information overload. Therefore, I wouldN’T want to contribute to that information overload myself so I try to keep my blog posts relevant and I use Twitter to interact with a select group of people who I am trying to engage. Anyway, on the screen for entering the API endpoint, Tweetie 2 says it doesN'T officially support other microblogging services.Read more comments by Thomas Ho | |

| Has anyone else noticed any problems with Tweetie 2 when adding your WordPress.com account?I started having authentication problems with both my Twitter as well as my WordPress.com accounts from Tweetie 2!When entering the API endpoint, I noticed that Loren Brichter inserted a message saying “Alternative microblogging services are not officially supported, and some features may not work as expected” Hence, I am reluctant to raise this issue with Atebits.com.Read more comments by Thomas Ho | |

| Although I follow many brands for "deals" or contests, I have many great examples of great customer service provided to me by companies via social media channels such as @GriffinTech and @iGo. I've told these stories to many folks, but I guess I ought to blog about it as well, shouldn't I? ;-) | |

| Good morning! Here is this week’s newsletter. There will not be one next week due to Thanksgiving. Thanks, Jennifer Huff P.S. from Tom Ho: I had hoped that Airset had some mechanism for posting a file to the group, BUT I'm emailing it for now UNTIL I find another way to get it to you. I personally don't like to receive large attachments so that's way I'm "apologetic" about doing it this way. | |
